Morristown, TN – Powerful southerly winds will impact eastern Tennessee and the Smoky Mountains beginning overnight, with the National Weather Service in Morristown continuing a Wind Advisory from midnight to 2 p.m. EDT Sunday. The strongest winds are expected across the Smoky Mountains, where gusts could reach 55 mph.

According to the NWS, most areas—including Scott, Campbell, Johnson, Monroe, Greene, Carter, and Sevier counties—will experience south winds of 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, while exposed ridges and mountain passes could see even higher gusts.

Forecasters warn that the combination of strong winds and saturated soil could result in downed limbs or small trees, leading to localized power outages and difficult travel conditions, particularly on mountain roads and interstates such as I-40 through the Smokies.

Residents and visitors are urged to secure outdoor items, including camping gear and holiday decorations, before conditions worsen. High-profile vehicles should use extra caution on elevated or exposed roadways.

Winds are expected to gradually diminish by Sunday afternoon as the front moves eastward.
