Knoxville, Tenn. – Severe storms could bring damaging winds and large hail to much of East Tennessee through 6 p.m. Friday, prompting warnings from local emergency officials and the National Weather Service.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 6 p.m. EDT for 16 counties including Anderson, Sullivan, Washington, and Greene. The storms may produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail over one inch in diameter, increasing the risk of downed trees and power lines.
Communities from Johnson City to Oak Ridge are advised to secure outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel. Power outages and hazardous road conditions are possible, especially in rural and elevated areas like Campbell and Claiborne counties. Schools and businesses are monitoring for potential early closures as the line of storms tracks eastward.
Drivers on I-26 and I-81 should stay weather-aware, as visibility and debris could become sudden hazards. Residents should charge devices, monitor NOAA Weather Radio, and prepare for brief periods of heavy rain and lightning.
This thunderstorm watch remains in effect through early evening, with additional warnings possible as storm cells intensify.
