Gatlinburg, TN – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday for parts of East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, where snow showers continue to create slippery travel conditions, especially in higher elevations above 2,500 feet.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, snow totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with locally up to 4 inches possible in the highest peaks of the Great Smoky Mountains and Unicoi Range. Areas affected include Johnson, Cocke, Greene, Carter, and Monroe Counties in Tennessee, and Wise, Russell, and Washington Counties in Virginia.

Forecasters caution that roads in mountain passes and along the Blue Ridge could become snow-covered and slick, impacting the Thursday morning commute. Lower elevations may see brief snow showers with light accumulations on grassy surfaces.

Motorists are advised to slow down, allow extra travel time, and monitor 511 for the latest road updates before traveling through mountain corridors or park areas.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve by late morning as snow showers taper off and temperatures slowly rise above freezing.
