Morristown, TN – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for East Tennessee and southwest Virginia through early Tuesday, as widespread snow showers and gusty winds create slick roads and low visibility, according to the National Weather Service in Morristown.
Forecasters say most areas will see less than an inch, but 1 to 3 inches are possible in higher elevations, with locally higher totals on ridges and peaks. Counties under advisory include Knox, Campbell, Scott, Claiborne, Sullivan, Johnson, and Wise, along with portions of southwest Virginia including Lee, Russell, and Washington.
The Monday evening commute remains the most hazardous period, as bursts of snow could cause sudden reductions in visibility and slick road surfaces—especially along I-40, I-81, and U.S. 25E corridors. Winds may gust up to 35 mph, leading to blowing snow in open and elevated areas.
Drivers are urged to slow down, use caution, and monitor 511TN.gov or Virginia 511 for updated travel conditions. Snow showers are expected to taper off gradually overnight, though patchy ice could persist into the Tuesday morning commute.
Temperatures will remain below freezing through early Tuesday, keeping many roads icy and treacherous in shaded and rural areas.
