East Tennessee – Motorists traveling through East Tennessee were protected from a potentially dangerous situation this week after the Tennessee Highway Patrol removed a commercial semi-truck from service following a detailed safety inspection.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a trooper with the Motor Carrier Plus East Region conducted a Level I inspection on a commercial motor vehicle and identified multiple serious safety violations affecting both the truck and the driver.
Troopers reported the semi-trailer was operating with a deflated air suspension system, with all four air bags completely flat, along with a flat tire. Investigators also found the semi-trailer did not have a valid annual inspection on file, a requirement for commercial vehicles operating on public roadways.
Further inspection revealed additional issues with the truck tractor itself. According to THP, the vehicle’s brakes were out of adjustment, increasing the risk of reduced stopping power. Troopers also discovered the required onboard fire extinguisher was empty and the driver’s medical certification was invalid at the time of the inspection.
Due to the severity of the violations, the driver, truck tractor, and semi-trailer were all placed out of service. THP stated the vehicle will remain off the roadway until all safety concerns are fully addressed and brought into compliance.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol emphasized that commercial vehicle inspections play a critical role in preventing crashes and keeping both truck drivers and the traveling public safe.
“Safe roads start long before the wheels turn — with proper maintenance, compliant drivers, and safety equipment that’s ready when it’s needed,” THP stated.
Motorists are encouraged to report unsafe commercial driving behavior and remain cautious around large trucks, especially on major highways and freight corridors across Tennessee.
