Knoxville, Tenn. – Heavy rain and the threat of localized flash flooding will persist across East Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and southwest North Carolina through Wednesday as tropical moisture streams north from the Gulf of Mexico.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, periods of showers and embedded thunderstorms will continue to develop, bringing rainfall rates high enough to overwhelm drainage systems. If storms repeatedly track over the same locations, streams and creeks could rise rapidly, leading to flash flooding.

Communities from Chattanooga to Kingsport — including Knoxville, Morristown, and the Smoky Mountain foothills — may experience roadway flooding, especially in low-lying and poor-drainage areas. Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads and never attempt to cross flooded areas. Those living near creeks or rivers should monitor water levels closely.

In addition to flooding, reduced visibility and ponding on major routes like I-40, I-75, and I-81 could create dangerous travel conditions during heavy downpours. Keep cell phones charged and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.

The flood threat is expected to continue until Wednesday night, with additional advisories possible if rainfall totals climb.
