Knoxville, Tenn. – Drivers across Knox and Anderson counties could face water-covered roads through mid-morning as thunderstorms dump heavy rain on East Tennessee.
According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, a Flood Advisory is in effect until 9:30 a.m. EDT Tuesday. Radar showed persistent downpours over Knoxville, Oak Ridge, Clinton, and surrounding communities, with ponding and minor flooding already reported in low-lying and poor-drainage areas.
Flood-prone spots include neighborhoods near creeks, underpasses, and older roadways in Farragut, Powell, Halls, and Oliver Springs. Commuters should allow extra travel time and avoid areas where water covers the roadway. The NWS urges drivers to “turn around, don’t drown,” as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.
Morning rain is expected to taper off later today, but brief heavy bursts could continue until the advisory expires. Officials say another round of storms could develop this afternoon if conditions remain unstable.
