Knoxville, Tenn. – Heavy downpours could lead to dangerous flash flooding across East Tennessee, southwest Virginia and parts of southwest North Carolina through Wednesday evening. The National Weather Service warns that slow-moving thunderstorms may drop several inches of rain over already saturated ground, sending water quickly into rivers, creeks and low-lying streets

According to the NWS in Morristown, a Flood Watch covers more than 40 counties, including Knoxville, Chattanooga, Johnson City and the Smoky Mountain communities. Storms are expected to repeatedly track over the same areas, increasing the risk for flash flooding in both rural valleys and urban neighborhoods. Poor drainage spots and underpasses are particularly vulnerable.

Emergency officials urge drivers to avoid flooded roads, as just a few inches of moving water can carry away vehicles. Residents in flood-prone zones should be ready to move to higher ground quickly. The Tennessee Department of Transportation advises checking road conditions before travel and keeping cell phones charged in case of power outages.

The Flood Watch remains in effect until tonight, with additional advisories possible if storms persist into Thursday.
