Jackson, Miss. – Morning drivers across east Mississippi are navigating dense fog Thursday, with visibility dropping to as low as a quarter mile in some areas. The National Weather Service has issued a Level 1 Limited Fog Advisory through 9 a.m., warning commuters to plan for extra travel time.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the thickest fog has settled over counties including Noxubee, Lowndes, Lauderdale, Neshoba, and Kemper, stretching across key corridors near Columbus, Meridian, and Philadelphia. Visibility is expected to remain reduced until mid-morning before conditions improve as temperatures rise.
Transportation officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distances, and use low-beam headlights. The Mississippi Department of Transportation noted that fog-related crashes are most common during morning hours when drivers misjudge stopping distances.
Commuters in Columbus and Meridian should expect slower traffic on highways including U.S. 45 and Interstate 20. School buses and early work traffic may be impacted until fog lifts.
The fog threat is expected to diminish by mid-morning, but more advisories could be issued if similar conditions redevelop overnight or into early Friday.
