GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Drivers in East Grand Forks will need extra caution Thursday as steady showers hit the morning commute and could leave roads slick well into the afternoon. Temperatures will struggle to climb beyond the low 50s, making for a raw, damp start to September.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, rain will be widespread until late afternoon with up to a half-inch possible. Winds will shift northwest overnight, dropping temperatures into the low 40s and leaving Highway 2 and local streets wet and potentially hazardous for early travelers Friday morning.

Friday improves with partly sunny skies and highs near 59, though northwest gusts could reach 29 mph, making it a breezy day for outdoor plans. Friday night lights for local football games look mostly dry but chilly, with temperatures falling into the low 40s after sunset.

Saturday brings brighter skies, with highs near 60 under calmer winds, before a stronger warming trend takes hold Sunday and Monday. Sunshine returns full force with highs in the mid- to upper-60s Sunday and pushing into the mid-70s by Monday afternoon.

Residents should plan for layered clothing Friday and Saturday, especially at evening events. By late weekend, lighter jackets will be enough as summer-like warmth returns. More showers are not expected until midweek.
