Boston, MA – Powerful winds are sweeping across the East Coast today, with wind advisories in effect from Maine to Virginia as a strong cold front moves through the region. Forecasters warn gusts of 50 to 55 mph could bring down tree limbs, disrupt travel, and trigger scattered power outages through Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service, strong southerly winds early Friday are shifting to west and northwest winds behind the cold front. The most intense gusts are expected late morning through the evening, especially in elevated and coastal areas.

In Maine and New Hampshire, south to southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts near 50 mph are expected through tonight, with the strongest winds affecting interior and coastal communities. Power outage risk is elevated due to saturated soils and weakened trees.

Across Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York, wind advisories remain in effect into early Saturday. Gusts between 45 and 55 mph may impact highways, bridges, and outdoor holiday decorations.

Farther south, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, and West Virginia are also under wind advisories. In the Appalachians and ridge tops, gusts could exceed 55 mph, making travel difficult for high-profile vehicles.

Utility crews across the region are on standby as falling limbs and isolated power line damage are possible. Drivers are urged to use caution, especially on north-south roadways and exposed bridges.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects, avoid parking near trees, and monitor local weather alerts throughout the day.
