Boston, Massachusetts — A powerful wind system is impacting the East Coast Tuesday, with gale warnings offshore and wind advisories inland from Maine through Maryland, according to the National Weather Service.
West to northwest winds are gusting 45 to 55 mph inland across New England, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and portions of the Carolinas. The strongest gusts are expected along the coast, higher terrain, and exposed urban corridors, including Boston, Providence, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and coastal New Jersey.
The National Weather Service reports widespread wind advisories remain in effect through Tuesday afternoon or evening across Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and northern North Carolina, with some areas extending into early Wednesday.
Offshore, gale warnings are in effect from the Gulf of Maine southward to the Mid-Atlantic coastal waters, including Georges Bank, Long Island offshore waters, the Chesapeake Bay, and coastal waters from Delaware to Virginia. Marine forecasts call for sustained winds of 30 to 45 knots and seas building between 10 and 20 feet, creating dangerous conditions for mariners.
The strongest marine winds are expected through Tuesday morning, with hazardous seas persisting into Tuesday night in some offshore zones. Light freezing spray has also been reported in the Gulf of Maine.
Forecasters warn that gusty winds could down tree limbs, blow unsecured objects, and cause scattered power outages, particularly where soils remain soft or snow cover persists. High-profile vehicles may experience difficult travel conditions on bridges and open highways.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, use caution while driving, and avoid marine travel until conditions improve.
Morning commuters, coastal workers, and maritime operations are most affected by the ongoing wind event.
