Miami, Fla. – A tropical wave churning in the central Atlantic has a 70% chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next week as it pushes toward the northern Leeward Islands, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Forecasters said Thursday that showers and thunderstorms tied to the disturbance have become more concentrated, creating conditions favorable for rapid organization. The system is expected to strengthen this weekend while tracking near or north of the Leeward Islands, with a 30% chance of development over the next 48 hours.
Residents from Puerto Rico to the Virgin Islands and the northern Caribbean are being advised to monitor updates closely, as early organization could bring heavy rain and gusty winds by late weekend. While no watches or warnings are currently in place, the NHC said a tropical depression is “likely” to form as the system continues its west-northwestward path.
Farther east, another disturbance southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands carries a 40% chance of development, though forecasters note conditions will become less favorable by the end of the week.
Tropical outlooks will be updated several times daily as both systems evolve.
