Philadelphia, PA – After days of sweltering triple-digit heat indices, a sharp temperature drop is on the horizon for eastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. Overnight lows are expected to plunge into the 50s by Thursday, bringing the first real relief from a miserably hot July.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a cold front moving through the region Thursday will usher in significantly cooler, less humid air. Mount Pocono could dip as low as 54°F Thursday night and 53°F Friday morning. Hackettstown, Reading, and Allentown will also see lows in the mid-to-upper 50s through the weekend.

Philadelphia, Trenton, and Wilmington will enjoy a milder cooldown, with lows in the mid-60s and highs falling from near 100°F to the upper 70s by Friday. The region’s oppressive heat and humidity will be replaced with more seasonable temperatures—well-aligned with NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook showing below-normal conditions through early August.

Residents should take advantage of the cooler stretch to reduce energy usage and hydrate after a taxing heat wave. Open windows for natural ventilation, but be mindful of allergy-sensitive individuals.

Cooler temps and lower dew points are expected to hold through early next week. Further updates will follow if severe weather develops with Thursday’s front.
