Blacksburg, VA – Severe storms are expected to strike Virginia and parts of the East Coast beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday, bringing damaging winds and heavy rainfall through Monday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a slow-moving frontal boundary is forecast to trigger thunderstorms capable of localized wind gusts exceeding 55 mph. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 1 marginal risk for severe storms across southwest and central Virginia, including Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Danville.
The threat of flash flooding is also elevated, especially east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Weather Prediction Center indicates areas near and east of I-77 could receive 1.5 to 3 inches of rain through Monday evening, with 0.5 to 1 inch possible to the west.
Residents are urged to prepare for downed trees, power outages, and localized flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. Storm activity is expected to begin between 2 and 10 p.m. Sunday and continue with moderate rainfall into Monday night.
