Miami, FL – New data from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) shows Tropical Storm Melissa gaining strength in the Caribbean, prompting watches across parts of Haiti and Jamaica while long-range models hint at a possible shift toward the U.S. East Coast next week.

According to the NHC’s Wednesday morning advisory, Melissa had sustained winds near 50 mph and was moving west-northwest at about 14 mph. A Hurricane Watch remains in effect for Haiti’s southern coast, with a Tropical Storm Watch issued for Jamaica. Meteorologists warn of heavy rain, flash flooding, and landslides across Hispaniola through the weekend.

Forecast models from WeatherNerds.org show a wide “spaghetti” spread—some tracks curve Melissa northward toward the Bahamas and off the southeastern U.S. coast, while others keep it over the western Caribbean. The Florida Sheriffs Association noted that current trends point the system northeast, away from Florida, but urged residents to “stay alert” given the storm’s unpredictability.

The Atlantic hurricane season continues through November 30, and NOAA reminds coastal residents to review preparedness plans as confidence in Melissa’s future path remains low.
