Boston, Massachusetts – A powerful winter storm is lining up to deliver heavy snow, crippling ice, and widespread travel disruption along much of the East Coast this weekend, with some communities facing totals approaching two feet before the system pulls away early next week.
According to the National Weather Service and the Weather Prediction Center, snow is expected to break out from the Mid-Atlantic into southern New England by Saturday evening, intensifying overnight and continuing into Monday. Confidence is growing for widespread totals of 12 to 18 inches across interior portions of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and parts of New Hampshire, with locally higher amounts where snow remains dominant.
Across the Mid-Atlantic, including Maryland, northern Virginia, and southern Pennsylvania, the heaviest snow is likely Saturday night into Sunday morning. Transportation agencies warn that snowfall rates could overwhelm plowing operations, especially along I-95, I-83, and I-70 corridors. Freezing rain and sleet may mix in south and east of the main snow band, increasing the risk for power outages and downed trees.
Travel impacts are expected to peak late Saturday night through Sunday, with dangerous road conditions lingering into Monday morning. Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel, charge devices ahead of time, and prepare for potential power disruptions.
Warnings and watches remain in effect across much of the region, and additional advisories could be issued as the storm track sharpens.
