New York, NY – Much of the East Coast is bracing for a stretch of intense heat and intermittent thunderstorms beginning midweek and continuing through Juneteenth, with temperatures soaring into the 90s across several major cities.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service, a surge of heat and humidity will arrive Wednesday and persist into the weekend. While showers and thunderstorms are possible throughout the region, Juneteenth forecasts show a widespread return of sunny skies combined with elevated temperatures from New York to Florida.

In New York City, Juneteenth is expected to be partly sunny with a high near 88 degrees and a 30 percent chance of afternoon showers or storms. Further south, Washington D.C. and the surrounding DMV region will see a high near 93 with a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms throughout the day.

In Miami, the forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and a high near 89, while the chance of precipitation remains low. Heat index values could climb higher due to humidity, especially in southern states.

Inland areas will not be spared. Columbus, Ohio is forecast to reach 85 degrees with a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms on Juneteenth. Nashville may see more rain activity, with showers and storms likely and a high around 90. St. Louis is expected to reach 89 with only a 20 percent chance of rain. In Chicago, conditions will be mostly sunny with a high near 83 and a chance of showers.

The National Weather Service warns that extreme heat remains one of the leading weather-related causes of death. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, and check weather.gov and heat.gov for safety tips and updated forecasts.
