Islip, NY – Drivers across the Mid-Atlantic and New England faced near whiteout conditions Sunday as a powerful winter storm buried parts of the East Coast under more than 2 feet of snow and unleashed wind gusts strong enough to down trees and cut power.
According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, snowfall totals as of 11 a.m. EST Monday show 26.5 inches in Islip, New York, 26.0 inches in Narragansett, Rhode Island, and 24.6 inches in Providence. Freehold, New Jersey reported 24.2 inches, while Southampton, New York recorded 24 inches. Newark picked up 18.3 inches, and New York City measured 15.1 inches.
In New England, Foxborough, Massachusetts saw 21.5 inches, with 16 inches reported in both Bridgeport and New Haven, Connecticut. Lewes, Delaware recorded 18 inches, while Dover measured 16.5 inches. Even coastal Maryland saw significant accumulation, including 10.5 inches in Ocean City and 9 inches in Salisbury.
The heavy snow combined with damaging winds. Nantucket, Massachusetts clocked an 83 mph gust, while Wellfleet and Barnstable reached 77 mph. Boston reported 61 mph gusts, and JFK Airport in New York City hit 60 mph, creating blowing snow and dangerous travel on I-95 and regional parkways.
Crews across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and southern New England continue clearing primary highways, but secondary roads remain snow-covered. Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel as plow operations continue and scattered power outages persist.
Additional local storm reports may be added as crews complete surveys across the region.
