Interstates across the Southeast are experiencing hazardous to life-threatening travel conditions as a major winter storm drops heavy snow from Tennessee to the Carolinas and the East Coast.

According to the National Weather Service, Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect across Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and coastal Mid-Atlantic corridors, impacting major routes including I-40, I-26, I-77, I-81, I-85, and I-95.

Snow accumulations range from 6 to 12 inches, with localized totals exceeding one foot across eastern North Carolina, the Carolina coastal plain, and parts of the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians. Winds gusting 35 to 70 mph are producing blowing and drifting snow, resulting in near-zero visibility on exposed highways and bridges.

The most severe travel conditions are reported across eastern North Carolina, the Outer Banks, southeast Virginia, the Carolinas’ Piedmont and coastal regions, and mountain corridors of Tennessee, where whiteout conditions may persist for hours. In coastal areas, blizzard conditions are possible, with snow rapidly covering plowed roadways.

Transportation officials warn that road closures, jackknifed trucks, and stranded motorists are increasingly likely overnight and through Sunday. Even after snowfall decreases, drifting snow and refreezing will continue to impact travel, particularly on secondary roads and elevated surfaces.

Motorists are urged to avoid all non-essential travel. Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, blankets, and a flashlight, and be prepared for extended delays. Road condition updates are available through 511 services in all affected states.

Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through Sunday morning to Sunday evening, depending on location, with travel impacts expected to continue beyond the end of snowfall.
