Jacksonville, Florida — Authorities along the U.S. East Coast are warning residents about a viral TikTok prank known as the “Door Kicking Challenge,” which officials say is resurfacing in neighborhoods this spring from Maine to Florida.
According to law enforcement alerts issued in several communities, the trend involves individuals forcefully kicking or pounding on front doors before running away, sometimes recording the act for social media.
The behavior has also been referred to online as “door punch” or an extreme version of “ding-dong ditch.” However, authorities say the activity goes far beyond simply ringing a doorbell.
When someone aggressively strikes a front door—especially late at night or while wearing a mask—homeowners often have no way of knowing who is outside or what their intentions may be.
That uncertainty can quickly create dangerous situations.
Authorities warn startled residents may believe someone is attempting to break into their home, potentially leading to defensive reactions or confrontations.
Police departments across the United States first reported incidents tied to the challenge last year after videos circulated widely on TikTok. Officials say similar reports often increase during the spring as warmer weather brings more activity to residential neighborhoods.
Beyond safety concerns, authorities warn the prank can lead to criminal charges. Depending on the circumstances, possible offenses may include disorderly conduct, trespassing, harassment, or property damage.
Officials are urging parents to speak with their children about the risks and legal consequences associated with participating in the trend.
Residents who experience someone aggressively hitting or kicking their door are advised not to confront the individual outside. Instead, authorities recommend calling 911 and allowing law enforcement to respond.
For younger residents and students who may encounter the trend online, officials stress that what may appear to be a harmless social media stunt can quickly escalate into a serious public safety situation.
