Columbus, North Carolina – Residents in Polk County reported light shaking early Wednesday after a magnitude 2.7 earthquake struck just north of Columbus around 11:14 a.m. local time.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the tremor occurred roughly 7 kilometers north of Columbus at a shallow depth of 5.6 kilometers. While minor, more than half a dozen people submitted “Did You Feel It?” responses indicating mild vibrations, especially in areas west of Charlotte and along the South Carolina border.

No damage or injuries have been reported, and emergency management agencies have not issued any alerts. Light earthquakes like this are not uncommon in western North Carolina, which lies near several minor fault lines running through the Blue Ridge region. Experts from the University of Memphis’ Center for Earthquake Research and Information confirmed the quake as part of their regional monitoring program.

Residents are reminded that even small tremors can occasionally cause objects to fall or rattle in homes. It’s a good idea to secure heavy furniture and review basic earthquake safety steps, especially for those living near known seismic zones.

No aftershocks have been reported, but USGS continues to monitor for additional seismic activity in the region.
