East Chicago School Stabbing Leaves Teen Hospitalized, Suspect in Custody

East Chicago, IN – A fight between two juveniles escalated into a stabbing Tuesday outside East Chicago Lighthouse Academy. A 14-year-old boy was injured and a 13-year-old was taken into custody.

According to the East Chicago Police Department, officers were dispatched to the school at 3:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a stabbing. The school’s principal told officers that a student sought help after being stabbed in the face. The 14-year-old victim was transported to St. Catherine Hospital for treatment of a wound to his left cheek.

Investigators determined that the fight occurred off school property, where the 13-year-old allegedly stabbed the older boy with scissors. The suspect was brought to the police station by his parents, interviewed, and charged with Disorderly Conduct and Assault with a Deadly Weapon. The victim also faces a Disorderly Conduct charge.

The suspect was transferred to Lake County Juvenile Center. The injured teen remains under medical care.

Authorities are urging parents to discuss conflict resolution with their children to prevent similar incidents.
