According to the East Chicago Police Department, officers responded around 2:37 a.m. on October 7, 2025, to 3504 Pennsylvania Avenue (Apt. 89) for an agency assist call. Upon arrival, police found the victim, later identified as John Champion Jr., 25, of Chicago, unresponsive with a stab wound to his lower abdomen.

Champion was transported to St. Catherine Hospital, where medical personnel later pronounced him deceased. Detectives have launched a homicide investigation and are working to determine what led to the fatal incident.
