Palestine, Texas – A dangerous ice storm is expected to take hold across parts of north and central Texas beginning late Friday night, creating a serious risk for widespread power outages and nearly impossible travel through Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, an Ice Storm Warning is in effect from midnight tonight until noon Sunday for Henderson, Freestone, Anderson, and Leon counties. Ice accumulations between one-half and three-quarters of an inch are expected, levels that are capable of causing extensive tree damage and long-lasting power disruptions.

Regional impacts are expected to be severe as freezing rain develops overnight and persists through the weekend. The weight of ice on power lines and trees is likely to lead to widespread outages, especially in rural areas. Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly, with roads becoming slick and potentially impassable. Bridges and overpasses will ice over first, creating extreme hazards on routes including U.S. 79, U.S. 287, State Highway 31, and State Highway 19.

In communities such as Palestine, Athens, Fairfield, Teague, Buffalo, Centerville, Jewett, and Oakwood, residents are urged to prepare for extended power outages. Emergency officials recommend assembling emergency kits with food, water, flashlights, and extra blankets, and checking on elderly or vulnerable neighbors.

Travel should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. If travel cannot be postponed, drivers are urged to proceed with extreme caution and carry winter survival supplies. The Ice Storm Warning remains in effect through Sunday midday, and additional advisories or extensions are possible if ice accumulations increase. Residents should monitor local alerts closely and check road conditions at DriveTexas.org before attempting any travel.
