East-Central Iowa Faces Cold Advisory: Frostbite Risk as Temperatures Plunge

Dubuque, IA – Residents in eastern and northeastern Iowa should prepare for dangerous cold weather starting early Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory from 3 a.m. to noon Sunday. Wind chills could drop as low as -26°F, posing significant frostbite risks. According to the advisory, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in under 30 minutes. Areas affected include Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Clinton.

The frigid conditions will make outdoor activities hazardous. The National Weather Service advises wearing proper winter clothing, including hats and gloves. Portable heaters should be used with caution to prevent fires, and residents should avoid using generators or grills indoors.

People should also check on vulnerable family members and neighbors during the cold snap. Pets should be kept indoors whenever possible.

Travelers are urged to use caution while driving and ensure vehicles are winter-ready. The advisory highlights the importance of preparedness to stay safe during the dangerously cold conditions.
