PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Heavy rain and thunderstorms drenched parts of east-central Florida Wednesday afternoon, prompting a Flood Advisory for Martin and St. Lucie counties through 4:30 p.m. The National Weather Service in Melbourne said excessive rainfall has caused minor flooding in poor-drainage and low-lying areas.

According to the National Weather Service, Doppler radar detected heavy rainfall near 3:25 p.m., with between 1 and 3 inches already fallen in several neighborhoods. Another inch of rain is possible before storms move out later in the afternoon.

Flooding has been reported in areas including Port St. Lucie, Jensen Beach, White City, Palm City, Walton, and Fort Pierce. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways, especially near the Port St. Lucie River, Indian River Estates, and Hutchinson Island South.

Officials warn that even shallow standing water can be dangerous. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the key safety reminder, as most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Conditions are expected to improve by evening, though additional showers could redevelop overnight as moisture lingers along the Treasure Coast. Residents should stay alert for updated advisories and avoid unnecessary travel until water levels recede.
