Melbourne, FL – Tropical Depression Nine is moving northward and is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm later today, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Melbourne. Watches and warnings remain in effect across the east central Florida coast and adjacent Atlantic waters.

According to NWS forecasters, tropical storm conditions are possible east of I-95 and expected over local Atlantic waters beginning Sunday evening and lasting through Monday night. The system could bring tropical storm-force wind gusts of 35–45 mph along the coast as outer rainbands move onshore.

Officials warn of dangerous marine conditions, with nearshore seas up to 10–13 feet north of Cape Canaveral and 8–11 feet to the south, peaking Monday into Tuesday. Offshore seas could reach 11–18 feet, creating hazardous boating conditions. At the same time, all east central Florida beaches face a high risk of life-threatening rip currents. Entering the surf is strongly discouraged over the next several days.

Surf heights are expected to build to 6–10 feet north of Cape Canaveral and 4–8 feet south, leading to moderate beach and dune erosion. Dangerous beach and boating conditions are forecast to continue into next week.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, including Halloween decorations and patio furniture, ahead of possible strong winds. Neighbors are encouraged to check on each other, and all residents should ensure weather alerts are active on their phones.

The National Weather Service stresses that changes to the storm’s track could affect the forecast. Updates will be posted at weather.gov/melbourne.
