Great Falls, MT – The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Warnings for both East and West Glacier regions in Montana, forecasting major travel disruptions and hazardous conditions late Saturday into Sunday.

According to NWS offices in Great Falls and Missoula, the warning is in effect from midnight Saturday through noon Sunday above 5,500 feet. The storm is expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of heavy, wet snow, with a 70% chance of 8 inches or more above 7,000 feet. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph, creating blowing snow and wind chill risks.

The warnings include Saint Mary, East Glacier Park, Logan Pass, Kiowa, Babb, and Marias Pass on the east side, as well as high-elevation areas of West Glacier including Going-to-the-Sun Road and Logan Pass. Officials warn that roads may become “difficult to travel or impassible,” and note that power outages and infrastructure disruptions are possible.

Cold, wet, and windy conditions are also raising concerns for hypothermia and frostbite among hikers and campers. Backcountry recreation and non-essential travel are strongly discouraged.

Residents and travelers are urged to prepare for significant delays and closures. Those who must drive should carry an emergency kit with food, water, and flashlights. Updated Montana road conditions can be obtained by calling 511 or visiting the MDT Road Report website.

This storm marks one of the first major winter weather events of the season for Glacier National Park, signaling the swift transition to winter at higher elevations.
