Birmingham, Alabama – Light snowfall is expected to create hazardous travel conditions across parts of east-central Alabama early Sunday, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to noon CST Sunday for Barbour, Pike, and Russell counties.

Forecasters expect snow accumulations up to one inch, with the greatest impacts likely on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roadways. While snowfall totals are modest, temperatures near freezing may allow snow to accumulate briefly, increasing the risk of slick spots.

The advisory area includes communities such as Eufaula, Phenix City, and Troy, where even light snow can disrupt travel due to limited winter road treatment and reduced driver familiarity with snow-covered conditions.

The National Weather Service warns that roads may become slick and hazardous, particularly during the early morning hours when snowfall coincides with lower temperatures. Conditions may improve by midday as snow tapers off, but some slick areas could persist for several hours.

Motorists traveling during the morning hours are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time, especially when crossing bridges or elevated road surfaces. Road conditions may vary widely over short distances.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local updates and adjust travel plans if possible. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions change.
