Sioux Falls, SD – The National Weather Service (NWS) Sioux Falls is warning residents across southeastern South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and parts of Nebraska to prepare for strong winds and the season’s first taste of winter beginning Tuesday morning through Tuesday night.
A High Wind Watch is in effect for south-central South Dakota, including Gregory County, where gusts could exceed 50 mph. Elsewhere, west-northwest winds of 30–50 mph are expected to develop early Tuesday, accompanied by falling temperatures and light snow, especially north of Interstate 90.
Snowfall totals are forecast to be light overall, with trace amounts near I-90 and up to 1–2 inches possible closer to Highway 14. The combination of strong winds and snow could lead to reduced visibility and slick roads, making travel hazardous at times.
The NWS urges drivers to use caution, especially on open stretches of road where blowing snow and crosswinds could make driving difficult. Conditions will begin to improve late Tuesday night as winds slowly diminish.
