Valmeyer, IL – A 46-year-old man from Valmeyer died early Tuesday after his vehicle left the roadway and overturned down an embankment along a levee, authorities said.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded around 6:18 a.m. after a passerby reported a vehicle off the road near Fountain Road and Levee Road. When deputies arrived, they located a 2012 Jeep Wrangler overturned at the base of the levee and found the driver, later identified as Nicholas D. Wittenbrink, unresponsive.

Emergency crews, including Monroe County EMS, attempted lifesaving measures with CPR and an AED, but Wittenbrink was pronounced dead at approximately 7:53 a.m. by the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.

Investigators determined that dense fog likely contributed to the accident. Authorities said Wittenbrink’s Jeep left the roadway and overturned after he attempted to overcorrect. Evidence indicates he was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle during the crash.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department reported that the Valmeyer Fire Department, Monroe County EMS and the coroner’s office assisted at the scene. Sheriff Neal Rohlfing extended condolences to Wittenbrink’s family and friends, noting the department’s support during this time.

The sheriff’s office concluded its investigation Tuesday morning, confirming no additional vehicles were involved.
