Poughkeepsie, NY – A fatal one-vehicle crash in the Town of Union Vale left a 25-year-old Poughquag man dead Wednesday evening, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday on Clove Road near Mack Road. Deputies say a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup truck was traveling southbound when the driver allegedly lost control, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and strike a tree.

Preliminary findings from investigators indicate that unsafe speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash. The operator, identified as Ryan E. Nichols, 25, of Poughquag, suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Town of Union Vale Fire Department responded to assist. Members of the Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau and Crash Investigation Unit remain on scene reviewing roadway evidence, vehicle condition, and potential additional contributing factors.

Authorities say more information will be released once next-of-kin notifications, forensic reviews, and crash reconstruction steps are completed.

Clove Road residents may notice continued police activity in the area as the investigation moves forward. Anyone who witnessed the crash or observed the vehicle shortly before the incident is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office.
