Durham, ME – Town officials are warning residents to be on alert for a new email scam in which senders are posing as the Town of Durham and requesting wire transfers for fake invoices.

According to a statement from the Town of Durham, several residents and businesses have recently reported receiving fraudulent emails that appear to come from town officials. The messages request payment or wire transfers for invoices allegedly due to the town — but officials confirm these are not legitimate.

“The Town of Durham would never ask anyone to wire money to the town,” officials said in the release. Residents who receive such messages are urged not to respond or send funds and to contact the town office to confirm authenticity.

Anyone who suspects they have received a scam email should call the Durham Town Office at (207) 353-2561 for verification.

Officials remind residents to double-check sender addresses and avoid clicking links or attachments in suspicious emails.
