Oak Brook, IL – A Chicago man is in custody after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase through DuPage County in a stolen Toyota 4Runner, with speeds reaching up to 100 mph before fleeing on foot near a school, authorities said.
According to the Oak Brook Police Department, 26-year-old Theon Mitchell was denied pre-trial release following his arrest on multiple felony charges, including aggravated possession of a stolen motor vehicle and aggravated fleeing and eluding police.
The incident began around 1:37 p.m. on March 19 when an Oak Brook officer spotted the reportedly stolen vehicle on Route 83. Police say Mitchell allegedly accelerated to 75 mph in rainy conditions when officers attempted a traffic stop. The chase continued as Mitchell made a U-turn, swerved onto the shoulder to avoid stop sticks, and ran a red light at Hodges Road.
Mitchell eventually exited onto 55th Street, reaching speeds between 80 and 100 mph before stopping near Helping Hand School in Countryside. Authorities say he then fled on foot but was found hiding in nearby bushes.
Officials emphasized that no students or staff were harmed during the pursuit. Mitchell is scheduled to appear in court on April 14 and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
