Glendale Heights, IL – A Glendale Heights man has been denied pre-trial release after allegedly firing a gun and leading police on a high-speed chase on Interstate 88.

Elexei Garcia, 34, appeared in court today facing charges of Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding a Police Officer and Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, both Class 4 felonies.

According to DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, the incident began early Tuesday morning when police responded to a domestic dispute on Gilberto Street. Garcia allegedly fired a gun into the air following an argument with his wife. When police arrived, Garcia fled at speeds up to 88 m.p.h. in a residential area, even driving on a grass parkway to evade capture. He then entered Interstate 88, continuing the high-speed pursuit before being apprehended by Wheaton police.

Berlin stated, “Recklessly firing a gun into the air, as alleged in this case, in a residential neighborhood potentially putting hundreds of people at risk, will not be tolerated in DuPage County.” Glendale Heights Chief of Police George Pappas praised the collaborative efforts of local law enforcement in apprehending Garcia.

Garcia’s arraignment is scheduled for August 19. Members of the public are reminded that these charges are not proof of guilt, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
