Oak Brook Terrace, Illinois – A Wisconsin woman has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a January 4 shooting in DuPage County that left one man dead in Oak Brook Terrace.
According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, 19-year-old Akrystal Woods of Milwaukee was charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Obaidullah F. Shareef. The charges were announced by State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Oak Brook Terrace Police Chief Casey Cavello.
Authorities said the shooting occurred January 4, 2026, in Oak Brook Terrace. Investigators alleged Woods fled Illinois following the incident. On February 5, law enforcement officials located and arrested her without incident in Wisconsin.
Woods remains in custody in Wisconsin while awaiting extradition to DuPage County, where prosecutors said she will face the charges. Her next court appearance is scheduled for February 10 in Milwaukee.
Berlin said fleeing to another state does not place a defendant beyond the reach of law enforcement, crediting coordinated efforts between Oak Brook Terrace police, DuPage MERIT investigators, and the Milwaukee Police Department for the arrest. He also offered condolences to Shareef’s family and friends.
Cavello said the investigation relied on regional collaboration and resources provided through MERIT, allowing detectives to identify the suspect quickly and secure the arrest.
Assistant State’s Attorneys Helen Kapas, Ken Tatarelis, and Nicholas Covert were recognized for their role in filing charges, according to officials.
No additional details about the circumstances of the shooting were released. Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone seeking further information has been directed to contact Detective Sergeant Jeffery Bryant with the Oak Brook Terrace Police Department.
Woods is presumed innocent. The charges are allegations, and the government bears the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
