DuPage County, IL – A fast-moving brush fire temporarily shut down portions of Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve near I-55 Friday afternoon, prompting police to redirect visitors and close trails between mile markers 5 and 6.

According to the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, the wildfire was reported around 3:09 p.m., with flames impacting areas adjacent to the main trail system near Cass Avenue and Route 83. Fire crews responded quickly and worked to contain the blaze as officers directed patrons away from affected sections of the preserve. No injuries or property damage were reported.

The closure affected popular stretches of trail near the Rocky Glen Waterfall area and portions of the main loop frequently used by hikers and cyclists. Drivers along Interstate 55 may have noticed emergency vehicles staged near access points to the preserve during the response.

By 3:17 p.m., officials confirmed the fire was no longer a threat and announced that trails were reopening. The quick containment prevented the blaze from spreading farther into dry brush, which has been more vulnerable amid recent mild and breezy conditions across northern Illinois.

Visitors are reminded to use caution during dry periods, avoid open flames and follow all posted preserve guidelines. Authorities say they will continue monitoring conditions, especially if dry weather and gusty winds persist across DuPage County.
