Wheaton, IL – A Chicago man found guilty in a violent 2022 Route 83 shooting that injured an eight-months-pregnant woman has been sentenced to 48 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, DuPage County officials announced Wednesday.
According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Judge Daniel Guerin issued the sentence for 42-year-old Lawrence Grant following a four-day trial that concluded on May 23, 2025. Jurors found Grant guilty of Attempt First Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, and two counts of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm — all Class X felonies.
Authorities said the shooting happened on January 28, 2022, around 7 p.m., after a confrontation inside a grocery store in the 6300 block of Kingery Highway in Willowbrook. According to police, Grant, the victim, and another individual were involved in a verbal dispute that allegedly turned physical. After leaving the store in separate vehicles, investigators say Grant followed the woman as she drove south on Route 83 and allegedly fired multiple rounds at her vehicle, striking her in the back and causing a crash.
Officers found the victim wounded inside her crashed car. She was rushed to a local hospital, where doctors delivered her baby during emergency surgery. Both mother and child survived and later recovered, officials said.
Grant was taken into custody later that night after police located him at the University of Chicago Hospital. His vehicle was found on fire roughly a block away from the facility, authorities said.
Grant will be required to serve 85% of his 48-year sentence before he is eligible for parole.
