Carol Stream, IL – A Carol Stream man has been charged with hate crimes after allegedly spray-painting profane graffiti on the Carol Stream Police Station and two nearby businesses late Wednesday night.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Joshua Sanchez, 30, of the 400 block of Silverleaf Boulevard, was arrested on September 24 after police responded to a report of vandalism at Chrissy’s Gaming Bar & Grill on North Gary Avenue. Officers say they observed Sanchez spray-painting profanity, including slurs targeting Israel and political figures, on the side of the police station.

When police took Sanchez into custody, they allegedly found a five-inch silver knife with metal and brass knuckles on the handle. Further investigation revealed additional graffiti at Chrissy’s Gaming Bar & Grill and a neighboring 7-Eleven, according to officials.

Sanchez has been charged with two counts of Hate Crime, one count of Criminal Damage to Government Supported Property, two counts of Misdemeanor Criminal Defacement of Property, and one count of Misdemeanor Weapons Possession. At his first court appearance Thursday, he was released under conditions barring him from the police department and the nearby businesses.

“Hate crimes, and the accompanying prejudice that fuels them, have no place in civilized society,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin said. Carol Stream Police Chief Don Cummings added that Sanchez’s possession of a weapon during the incident posed “an unnecessary risk” to the community.

Sanchez’s next court appearance is scheduled for October 20 before Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh.
