Wheaton, Illinois — A DuPage County judge denied pretrial release for three Chicago men accused in a high-speed interstate pursuit involving illegal firearms.
According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Judge Joshua Dieden on Tuesday granted prosecutors’ motion to detain Cameron McClellan, 27; Troy Hughes, 23; and Dante Williams, 23 while their criminal cases proceed.
Authorities allege McClellan, of Chicago’s South Stewart Avenue, drove a Jeep connected to a shooting investigation on March 11 when Bellwood police attempted to stop the vehicle. The pursuit began shortly before 5:50 p.m. and continued westbound on Interstate 88 through several suburbs.
Prosecutors allege McClellan reached speeds of about 100 mph along the shoulder of I-88 before accelerating to approximately 115 mph while weaving through traffic in Kane County. During the pursuit, authorities say two firearms were thrown from the passenger side of the vehicle.
Naperville police later recovered a stolen Glock 43X and a loaded Ruger .223 rifle, according to prosecutors.
The chase ended when McClellan allegedly drove the Jeep through the backyard of a residence on the 6500 block of Shagbark Lane in unincorporated DuPage County. Hughes and Williams allegedly exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
Officers later located McClellan inside the Jeep on North Deephaven Lane, while Hughes was found hiding in the basement of a nearby home and Williams inside a work van, authorities said.
Prosecutors allege all three defendants are convicted felons and legally prohibited from possessing firearms. McClellan is charged with armed violence, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Hughes and Williams each face multiple felony weapons charges.
The next court appearance for the defendants is scheduled for April 6, 2026 in DuPage County court.
For commuters and students traveling along Interstate 88, incidents like this can trigger sudden highway closures and major traffic delays during evening travel hours.
