DuPage County, Illinois — Yesterday, the DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) reported the first human case of West Nile Virus in DuPage County. The affected individual is a Glen Ellyn resident in their late 50s who began experiencing symptoms in mid-July.

This week, the Village of Oswego said that West Nile Virus was detected in a sample batch of mosquitos in that area. Carol Stream detected the virus in some mosquitos last week.

The DCHD said that West Nile Virus is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitos. The department also noted that most people do not experience symptoms. However, one in five affected individuals may develop fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash. Less than one percent may develop a serious illness such as encephalitis or meningitis, which is inflammation of the brain or surrounding tissue.

The DCHD encouraged residents to take precautions against the virus by staying indoors and wearing long sleeves or bug repellent when outside.
