Lombard, IL – As the holiday season winds down, Lombard residents are being reminded to properly dispose of Christmas trees, lights, and packaging as part of the village’s annual holiday recycling program now underway.

According to the Village of Lombard, Waste Management will collect natural Christmas trees and garland for free on residents’ regular service days from Sunday, January 5, through Thursday, January 16. Officials say all decorations must be removed, including ornaments, lights, wire, and tinsel, before trees are placed at the curb.

Residents also have a dedicated option for recycling holiday light strands. The village says light strings can be dropped off 24/7 in front of the Public Works building at 1051 S. Hammerschmidt Road through January 19. Plastic bags and yard ornaments are not accepted at the drop-off site.

The village also issued reminders about common holiday waste items that can cause recycling issues. Gift wrap is only recyclable if it is 100% paper, though tape is allowed. Plastic or foil wrap, ribbons, and bows should be reused or placed in the trash.

Cardboard boxes should be flattened to fit inside recycling carts, and residents are asked not to leave carts in the street to ensure snowplows can operate safely during winter weather.

Styrofoam and plastic film are not recyclable curbside, according to the village. These items must be thrown away or taken to specialized recycling locations. Officials note that some local organizations and community events may offer Styrofoam collection opportunities.

Residents are also encouraged to donate unneeded gifts or unexpired canned food to local community organizations.

More details can be found in the village’s Local Reuse and Recycling guide.
