Carol Stream, IL – As holiday decorations go up across DuPage County this week, the Carol Stream Fire Protection District is reminding residents to stay vigilant through its annual “Keep the Wreath Red” fire-safety campaign running now through January 1.
According to the Fire District, each of its three fire stations has placed a lit wreath outside the building, symbolizing community awareness during what is typically one of the busiest months for residential fire calls. Every wreath begins the season fully red; however, if a structure fire occurs that is tied to holiday decorations or displays, firefighters will replace a red bulb with a white one to mark the incident publicly.
The initiative, officials said, is meant to serve as a visible reminder to practice safe decorating habits—especially when using Christmas trees, extension cords, candles, lights, and other seasonal items.
The Fire District shared several ways residents can stay “fire safe” this holiday season. They encourage using surge-protected power strips instead of extension cords, unplugging decorative lights before leaving or going to bed, and ensuring artificial trees are flame-retardant. Those with real Christmas trees should keep them watered daily and dispose of them promptly if they dry out.
Firefighters also urge residents to keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn, blow out all candles before leaving a room, and avoid placing lit candles near children, pets, or combustible materials. Smoke detectors should be tested on every floor of the home.
The goal, the district says, is simple: maintain red wreaths all season long by preventing avoidable fires. Anyone with questions can contact Lieutenant Tim Cicero at 668-4836.
