DuPage County, IL – A judge has ordered a Bensenville man accused of attempting to kidnap a special needs grocery store employee to remain in custody without pretrial release, following a court hearing this week.
According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Judge Joshua Dieden granted prosecutors’ motion to deny pretrial release for Ismael Andrade Pino, 53, who is charged with attempted kidnapping, aggravated battery in a public place, and unlawful restraint stemming from an alleged incident at a Jewel grocery store in Bensenville.
Authorities say the alleged attack occurred December 22, at approximately 7:30 p.m., in the store’s parking lot. Prosecutors allege the 20-year-old victim, a special needs employee, was collecting shopping carts when Andrade Pino approached her and ordered her to go to his car. When she refused, he allegedly blocked her path and grabbed her by the neck.
According to prosecutors, Andrade Pino allegedly released the victim briefly before grabbing her a second time, letting go only after another person appeared nearby. The victim was not taken from the scene.
Officials say Andrade Pino returned to the Jewel store the following morning around 9 a.m., where staff recognized him and contacted police. Bensenville officers responded and took him into custody without incident.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin called the allegations “disturbing” and praised the victim for refusing the suspect’s demands and alerting authorities. Bensenville Police Chief Brad Swanson also commended responding officers and investigators for their swift response and coordination.
Andrade Pino is charged with one count of Attempt Kidnapping (Class 3 felony), two counts of Aggravated Battery in a Public Place (Class 3 felonies), and two counts of Unlawful Restraint (Class 4 felonies). His next court appearance is scheduled for January 20, 2026, before Judge Mia McPherson.
He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
