York, Ill. — The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office announced today, July 1, that a Chicago man was charged with aggravated battery against another patron at the York Theatre.

Delbert Patterson, 62, appeared in First Appearance Court yesterday. He was charged with one count of Aggravated Battery in a Public Place (Class 3 Felony). Patterson was released after his court appearance yesterday as required by law. His next court appearance is July 28, and he is prohibited from entering York Theatre at this time.

At approximately 6:26 p.m. on June 29, Patterson allegedly “made physical contact of an insulting and provoking nature” with the victim, a seventeen-year-old minor female, the complaint filed against Patterson said. Allegedly, he “used his right hand to stroke the victim’s left thigh and left buttocks.” A short time after that, Patterson was detained by bystanders and arrested outside the theater.

According to Chief of Police Michael McLean, the girl promptly told her father what happened. When Patterson tried to flee the scene, two bystanders chased him down and detained him until police arrived.

“Though criminals, such as alleged in this case, may commit such despicable acts in our society, it is gratifying to see the strength of our community demonstrated by the courageous actions of the victim, her father and the witnesses that rushed to help them,” McLean said.
