Dunn County, WI – A woman was found dead Thursday afternoon following a structure fire that fully engulfed a home in Elk Mound, according to the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Sheriff Kevin Bygd, dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 12:53 p.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2025, reporting a house fire with a resident trapped inside at E9099 570th Avenue in the Township of Elk Mound. Deputies said the resident had mobility issues and was unable to escape.
A delivery driver passing by also called authorities, reporting that the home was “fully engulfed in flames” and that he attempted to make entry but was forced back by heavy smoke and fire.
Responding crews from Elk Mound Fire, Colfax Fire, Wheaton Fire, Eau Claire Township Fire, and Menomonie Fire battled the blaze for several hours before bringing it under control. Colfax Ambulance and Menomonie Ambulance also assisted at the scene.
Once the fire was extinguished, responders located the body of a deceased woman inside the residence. She was pronounced dead by the Dunn County Medical Examiner’s Office. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, the Medical Examiner, and the Elk Mound Fire Department.
Authorities said the victim’s name is being withheld pending family notification.
