Dunn County, WI – An elderly woman has died following a house fire Thursday afternoon in Elk Mound, according to the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Kevin Bygd said emergency crews were dispatched around 12:53 p.m. on October 16, 2025, after a caller reported a structure fire with someone trapped inside a residence on E9099 570th Ave in the Township of Elk Mound. The resident reportedly had mobility issues and was unable to escape the flames.

According to the release, a delivery driver passing by also contacted dispatch, reporting that the home was already fully engulfed. Deputies and firefighters arrived to find the structure consumed by flames and smoke, preventing any immediate rescue attempts.

Crews from Elk Mound Fire Department, Colfax Fire, Wheaton Fire, Eau Claire Township Fire, and Menomonie Fire worked for several hours to control the blaze, assisted by Colfax and Menomonie Ambulance services.

After the fire was extinguished, responders discovered the body of a woman inside. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Dunn County Medical Examiner’s Office. Authorities later identified the victim as 81-year-old Patricia L. Meyer.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office, Dunn County Medical Examiner’s Office, and Elk Mound Fire Department.
