Duluth, Minnesota – Roads across northern Minnesota could turn slick before sunrise Thursday as a wintry mix moves in overnight, creating icy spots during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, light precipitation will develop late tonight and continue through Thursday morning, falling as a mix of snow and freezing drizzle. Even minor ice accumulation could create a glaze on untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks, especially in areas like Duluth, Hibbing, and International Falls.
Drivers along Highway 53, U.S. 2, and I-35 should be prepared for reduced traction and variable visibility early Thursday. Some locations may also pick up a light dusting of snow on top of icy surfaces, making conditions more hazardous.
Another round of light snow is expected Friday, though accumulations should remain minimal and more scattered across the Northland.
Residents are urged to slow down during the morning commute, allow extra stopping distance, and watch for black ice in shaded areas. Pedestrians should also use caution on untreated walkways.
A warming trend begins this weekend, with temperatures climbing steadily and some areas approaching 60°F by Sunday, helping to melt remaining snow and ice. Additional updates may be issued if icing becomes more widespread overnight.
