Duluth, Minnesota – A late-night shift to wintry weather could create slick roads across northern Minnesota by early Thursday morning, especially near the Canadian border.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, temperatures will run near to above normal through Wednesday before colder air arrives. The highest chances for wintry precipitation begin late Wednesday night into early Thursday, with areas along and north of US-2 facing the greatest risk for light icing and snowfall.

Communities including International Falls, Ely, and Hibbing could see a glaze of ice along with a few tenths up to 1 inch of snow by early Thursday. Even minor accumulations may create hazardous travel conditions on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses during the morning commute.

Farther south, including Duluth and Cloquet, precipitation may be lighter and more mixed, but brief slick spots remain possible as temperatures fall overnight. Winds will also increase slightly, adding to the chilly feel heading into Thursday.

Conditions improve later Thursday into Friday as drier air moves in, though cooler temperatures will settle across the region. Drivers should slow down early Thursday, allow extra travel time, and monitor updates as wintry conditions develop overnight.
